Once renowned and illustrious, The Repulse Bay Hotel has a rich historical heritage and was a gathering place for celebrities and aristocrats from around the world. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of Eileen Chang, one of the greatest modern Chinese writers. To commemorate this occasion, The Repulse Bay is proudly presenting the exhibition 'Eileen Chang's Repulse Bay: Love, Turbulence and Fragile Beauty' from 1 October 2025 to 1 March 2026. The exhibition invites visitors to explore the deep connection between this literary giant and the iconic hotel, delving into how the hotel became a source of inspiration for Chang and influenced her creative process during a time of changing eras.
Eileen Chang is acclaimed as one of the finest writers of modern Chinese literature. During her time in Hong Kong as a student, she frequently visited The Repulse Bay Hotel, drawing inspiration from its opulent ambiance. The hotel's Terrace Restaurant served as a classic setting for her renowned work, 'Love in a Fallen City', a tale of romance and turbulence set amidst the chaos of a tumultuous era. Through meticulously curated exhibition areas, visitors will be transported to Hong Kong on the brink of peril, as seen through Chang's enduring literary lens, bridging the golden age of the past with the sentiments of the present.
The exhibition will showcase a range of precious artefacts, including a 1941 hotel menu, historical photographs, and never-before-seen materials, shedding light on the glorious history of The Repulse Bay Hotel. Additionally, the exhibition will feature a special display of replicas of Chang's manuscripts and letters, generously provided by Hong Kong Metropolitan University, offering a glimpse into Chang's inner world and illustrating how the hotel nurtured her exploration of desire and pursuit of fleeting moments of beauty in a crumbling world.
Special thanks to Hong Kong Metropolitan University and the Hong Kong Social Development Review Project for their strong support in making this cultural journey possible. Hong Kong Metropolitan University has provided materials solely for cultural exhibition purposes and is not involved in exhibition admission fees or financial matters.
